Residency Programs People Are at the Heart of What We Do

We are committed to supporting residency programs focused on developing a talented, dedicated workforce. Through our programs, residents can learn and experience firsthand what it’s like to work at Norton Healthcare in a variety of health care fields.

Graduate Nurse Residency

All of our new graduate nurses at Norton Healthcare have the opportunity to join a residency cohort near the conclusion of unit orientation with their preceptor. These 12 monthly workshops provide conceptual and skill-based learning to help you build on what you learned in the classroom, experience clinical immersions and meet newly discovered professional growth needs.

Residency Cohorts

Cohorts are grouped by service line to customize learning and we offer specialties for two cohorts per year. Service lines include:

  • Surgical Services

Residency Format

Regardless of cohort, our graduate nurse residents participate in rotation learning workshops designed to help our new nurses gain confidence and develop professional relationships. Each workshop includes debriefing time to talk about your experience with peers as well as residency and service line leaders.

Service line workshops provide clinical and professional learning with a focus on your specialty, using either skill-based or population-specific learning. System workshops allow you to reflect on experiences and collaborate with others. They include opportunities to explore personal, professional and career growth on topics such as evidence-based practice, communication, conflict resolution, personal finance and professional development.

Neurological Physical Therapy Residency

The Neurological Physical Therapy Residency Program, in conjunction with Norton Neuroscience Institute and Bellarmine University, is a patient-centered program that provides clinical training in advanced physical therapy. Residents have the opportunity to experience advanced neurological rehabilitation training and make a lasting contribution in the community.

Residency Rotations

The residency program promotes the application of evidence-based knowledge and skills with emphasis on service and lifelong learning through clinical rotations and 1-to-1 mentorship in the following areas:

  • Advanced patient management skills (stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, vestibular system, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease)
  • Advanced pediatric patient management
  • Clinical, foundational and behavioral sciences
  • Clinical research
  • Community leadership
  • Differential diagnoses
  • Kinematic tests and measurements
  • Motivation and behavioral assessment and interventions
  • Neuropharmacology
  • Neuropsychiatry
  • Opportunities to gain teaching experience and skills for clinical mentoring
  • Radiographic imaging
  • Research interpretation

Residency Format

Our residents have the unique opportunity to work with patients with a variety of neurological diagnoses across acute-care and outpatient settings in this 52-week program. Starting in January, a typical week includes spending time in specialty clinics with therapists and physicians who are specialists in their field, teaching entry-level neurological lectures and laboratories at Bellarmine University’s Division of Physical Therapy, conducting clinical research and completing a case study. In addition, residents also participate in community service.

Our program has a 100% resident graduate passing rate for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) exam. For a unique opportunity to educate and empower patients, their families, caregivers and our community, apply for our neurological physical therapy residency.

Pharmacy Residency

Norton Healthcare’s pharmacy residency programs’ robust and comprehensive training environment prepares graduates for positions as acute-care pharmacist clinicians or for pursuing a second year of specialized postgraduate training. The postgraduate year one (PGY-1) pharmacy residency program builds on a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education, and the postgraduate year two (PGY-2) program prepares PGY-1 trained pharmacists in the specialized practice of caring for patients in the ambulatory care setting.

Residency Rotations

After completing orientation, residents develop knowledge, skills and competence in postgraduate year one (PGY-1) pharmacy residency in a broad range of pharmaceutical services. The majority of the year comprises four direct patient care rotations selected by the resident in consultation with the residency program director (RPD) and the following core rotations:

  • Adult internal medicine
  • Adult critical care medicine
  • Infectious diseases/stewardship
  • Transitions of care

Residency Format

The postgraduate year one (PGY-1) pharmacy residency year is divided into four quarters, each with three blocks that are either four or five weeks in length. Each hospital offers a unique facet to the customized training plan for our residents to engage with the pharmacy department and leadership at that location.

To best prepare our residents for the next step in their career, we offer customized schedules to focus on the resident’s individual development of knowledge and skills. Our residents will complete a longitudinal research project and obtain a teaching certificate, as well as have opportunities to mentor and educate students through both didactic and practice-based teaching.

College Students The Future of Health Care Is Inspiring

From college internships to apprenticeship programs, Norton Healthcare offers a variety of clinical and nonclinical settings for college students to explore career paths and become more involved with health care.

Respiratory Therapy Apprenticeship Program

College students currently enrolled in an accredited respiratory therapy program are eligible to participate in Norton Healthcare’s Respiratory Therapy Apprenticeship Program. Our paid apprenticeship program prepares college students for a registered respiratory therapist role after graduation.

Apprenticeship Overview

We’re proud that our program is the first hospital-based respiratory therapy apprenticeship program in Greater Louisville and prepares college students to join this critical health care field. Our program takes a tiered approach to practice experience and learning development. While compensation isn’t the only reason you chose a career in respiratory therapy, we know it matters, and that’s why we pay our apprentices while providing educational and observational experiences for 12 to 18 months.

Apprenticeship Requirements

To join our respiratory therapy apprenticeship program, you must be enrolled in at least the first semester of a professional respiratory therapy program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care or a comparable agency. Requirements for applicants include an online application and submission of academic transcripts, American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider course completion card, letters of recommendation, proof of clinical or shadowing experience and immunization records, as well as a pre-employment screening.

Student Nurse Apprenticeship Program

Norton Healthcare’s Student Nurse Apprenticeship Program (SNAP) is designed to ready our student nurses for professional practice. The program is three-tiered, using a culture, clinical, confidence model to fully and intentionally invest in our student nurses.

Program Overview

Nurses are essential in the health care industry. At Norton Healthcare, we value our student nurses and show them how indispensable they are by paying for their time as a student apprentice. We reinforce nursing education and patient safety as well as awareness and appreciation of nursing in the organization and operations of our organization.

Program Requirements

We welcome student nurses who are in their junior year of a Bachelor of Science in nursing program or have completed one term in an Associate of Science nursing program. If selected for the apprenticeship, you may elect to participate in one of many specialty areas in our sites of care.

Norton Healthcare High School Academy Program

Explore a career in health care now through the Norton Healthcare High School Academy Program. You’ll have the opportunity to work in a paid position in a fast-paced health care field. You’ll gain exposure to health care professionals and receive career coaching and other opportunities.

Academy Overview

The Norton Healthcare High School Academy is open to juniors and seniors ages 17 and older at participating high schools. If you are under age 18, you must have permission from a parent/legal guardian to participate. The 20-week program currently is scheduled to run January through June. You can work 12 or 20 hours per week in your choice of health care settings:

  • Receptionist: Join the front lines of the patient experience. Receptionists: at our medical offices serve an important role on the patient's care team. You will direct calls, check in patients and help support our care team.
  • Patient care associate (PCA) intern: Gain hands-on experience in an exciting health care role. As a PCA intern, you will support the medical/surgical teams at one of our adult-service hospitals.
  • Lab processor: This role offers you an opportunity to discover a growing field that is in high demand. You will label and manage specimens, help process test results and support your care team members.
  • Pharmacy technician: If you have the appropriate certifications for working with medications, you can gain immediate experience at one of our adult-service hospitals.

Academy Requirements

  • 1. You must be at least 17 years of age
  • 2. Participation in a Healthcare Academy Pathway at a partnering school
  • 3. Completed confidentiality oath and an authorization from signed by you (parent/guardian must co-sign if you are under age 18)
  • 4. Parent/guardian attestation giving Norton Healthcare the right to share student’s information with Trilogy Health Services
  • 5. Proof of TB test and Flu Shot (Flu Season: September 1 through May 31)
  • 6. Proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (two shots required if never had disease), Hepatitis B, Tdap (within the last 10 years)

Norton Healthcare Foundation Lansing Scholars Program

Recognizing a shortage of health care professionals, Donna and Allen Lansing graciously gave to the Norton Healthcare Foundation to support educational funding to qualified students pursuing a nursing career at Bellarmine University. One of our most elite programs, the Norton Healthcare Foundation Lansing Scholars Program is very selective, and only a few students each year are chosen as recipients.

Program Overview

If you are selected as a Lansing Scholar, Norton Healthcare will pay you $2,000 in the fall semester and $2,000 in the spring semester until you graduate. These funds are a gift and can be used for tuition, mandatory school supplies, technology expenses and even study abroad opportunities. Lansing Scholars are expected to demonstrate gratitude to Dr. and Mrs. Lansing and other leaders with the program, submit grades promptly and attend school-related public events to promote awareness of the benefits of the Norton Healthcare Foundation Lansing Scholars Program.

Program Requirements

To be considered for selection as a Lansing Scholar, applicants must be registered nursing students at Bellarmine University. All levels, including incoming freshmen and accelerated students, can apply; applications are accepted yearly from Sept. 1 to Oct. 15. To apply, students must meet a number of requirements — including having a 3.25 or higher cumulative GPA, submitting letters of recommendation or acceptance letter to Bellarmine University, and completing a one-page essay.

Program Overview

Norton Healthcare-UPS Health Care Career Tracks offers students the opportunity to work at UPS while taking prerequisite courses at Jefferson Community and Technical College or the University of Louisville. Twelve to 18 months before completion of the degree track or program, students will take professional courses and be invited to explore the following career options:

  • Continue working at UPS and apply to become a Norton Scholar.
  • Apply for a position at Norton Healthcare while completing your college program.
  • Apply for a student role in one of the career track programs at Norton Healthcare.
  • While at Norton Healthcare, you will have exposure to a variety of job roles and facilities to help prepare you for the workforce in a number of different career paths, from diagnostic imaging to nursing to respiratory therapy.
